Chantel's Family Photo Session

Chantel and her family contacted me while I was out of the country on vacation, but of course I booked them for the very first weekend I was home as I wanted to catch their outdoor photo shoot before all the green left us for the winter. What a cute family! Their children have eyes the size of saucers and mom and dad were so sweet and easy-going. The kids were not in the mood to pose, so we had to do our best by catching them in sweet moments. It is families like these that really make my job easy!

Farnsworth Family Photos

I did a fantastic session with the wonderful Farnsworth family this past week. What a loud, crazy, and amazing family they are! Mom and dad are ever so patient... especially with the youngest little one who was NOT in the mood for photos. Fortunately, dad knew the trick... candy and "bug juice" bribed her to stand and smile long enough for us to catch a few good shots of the family and all the girls. And speaking of girls, these young women are absolutely stunning! It is so easy to take pictures of people who are naturally glowing. =)

Best part of the evening - I was treated to McDonald's on the way home while Addie played in the playpen. I haven't had a night like that since I was living at home. It made me miss my own family! They were so fun!

Bellagio Gardens and Flowers

My wonderful hubbie decided to take me on a trip to Cali over Thanksgiving weekend, so we rented a car and made it a road trip. I love roadtrips! So many interesting things to look at and people to see!

On the way back from Cali, we decided to stop at the Bellagio in Vegas and stay a night to break up the drive. I was totally inspired by the breathtaking flower arrangements that always covered every table like so many bright, living sculptures.

I think my next lens purchase will be a macro lens. It was so frustrating trying to get close to the interesting curves of parts of flowers but being unable to because of the limitations of your lens! It is the only time I have been disappointed in my Nikon 50mm f/1.2!

Kids and Babies

You would think that taking pictures of babies would be harder than taking pictures of kids. Kids at least (in theory) can take SOME direction... when to smile, where to stand, teeth or no teeth, etc. However, I did 2 shoots in one day recently. One was a 1 week old newborn, and one was a toddler. The newborn, in my opinion, was WAY easier to shoot than the toddler! Part of the problem may have been that the toddler, Brinley, was sick and had some bad diarrhea, or as she calls it "rhea... OW!" So cute! Brinley and Hansen were absolutely adorable, and it was so fun to shoot them! Despite the fact that Brinley was sick and wouldn't crack a smile or hardly even take her fingers out of her mouth for anything, I think we got some semi-decent shots of her. Soccer

It seems that in the US we (I include myself in that) are finally catching on to the "soccer fever" that the rest of the world has had for years and years! With the US national team finally showing that they are something to talk about, interest has grown in this underdog sport, especially here in Utah where in recent years we have acquired the Real Salt Lake soccer team. This new-found interest in soccer has also increased enrollments for local Utah soccer leagues. Every kid out there is practicing to be the next Beckham.

Soccer, surprisingly, is one of the best sports for photographers. Photographers can somewhat more easily predict the next move in soccer, and more than one person can be shot as the "star" of a photograph unlike many other sports where a few major players dominate most of the game play. I have had a lot of fun shooting soccer games this season, and would like to share a few of my shots with you. Enjoy!

The New 12 Month Special:

Newborns and babies only! If you have a newborn 12 months old or younger and would like to capture their first months, so do I. That’s why Vie Photography has decided to implement this monthly special for a limited time.

What?
Dress up your newborn once a month for 12 consecutive months and give me a call. I will stop by or arrange to meet you somewhere to click away. I will deliver no less than 8 edited pictures for you each session via E-mail. At the end of the photo-year, I will also provide you with a 12 month calendar using the pictures we have taken throughout the year.

How Much?
$300 per year up front or $30 per Month

Why?
Because you want to capture the growth of your baby in the cutest, most memorable years. And because I want to further develop my portfolio in this specialty, but I don’t have any babies of my own yet.

Pinhole Fun!

For those of you who have an SLR at home, I have a fun experiment for you to try. It is a way to creatively use your digital camera to create some fun images.

Have you ever heard of a pinhole camera? If not, check out the wikipedia definition... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinhole_camera. Basically, the original versions were simple cameras with no lens and only one fixed apperature that was very small.

With a pinhole camera, you end up with intersting photos like this...

They are beautiful with seemingly uncontrolled light.

My fun pinhole experiment can be done one of two ways. The first way you can do this yourself is to remove the lens on your SLR and poke a hole in the cover where the lens would normally go. Please use an extra cover so you don't poke a hole in the only cover you have! You can use a needle first and do a few test shots. If you need to make the hole bigger, you can. You should end up with something like this...

This doesn't have to be the size of your pinhole; again, you can get creative and try different sizes. I wouldn't go too big though or your photos will all look washed out. By the way, if you don't want to poke a hole in your cap you can always tape a piece of black construction paper to the front and get the same effect. You can also try these pinhole shots with the lens on for different effects.

Now go out and shoot! Go out and get creative! The beauty of the pinhole camera is that you don't have to be precise with exposure to get an interesting-looking shot. Try taking a few shots of the same subject with different exposures, apperature settings, etc. and see which one you like best. It will take quite a few test shots before you get something you really love, but the result is always beautiful!

Part two of this experiment really gets interesting. I tried this and am still mastering the technique, but am having lots of fun with it. Get a construction paper punch that is in a shape, preferrably smaller like the size of your pinhole. I'm talking about the shape cutouts you use for scrap-booking like this...

Use construction paper and punch a hole in the center with your punch. Carefully tape it to the front of your slr either with the lens on or off. The beauty of this type of pinhole camera is that you can throw the camera out of focus and try to shoot something that has twinkling lights, and the lights will appear as the shape of your pinhole!

This was my first test shot with this type of pinhole. I unfocused the camera and took a picture of my parent's Christmas tree...

Now, imagine if someone were standing closer to the camera than the tree was. The person would be in focus and the twinkling hearts behind them would have been out of focus. Beautiful!

I am finding something new to do with my camera every day!
